Deputy National Youth Commissioner — Communications

Department: National — Marketing and Communications. 

Reports to: Senior Director, Marketing and Communications. 

Supervises: Marketing and Communications Creative Services & Production

Term: Re-appointed annually by the National Commissioner for a maximum of three years

Time required: 15 - 20 hours per monthly.
 

SUMMARY

Join the Communications Functional Team in a shared-leadership role to help define and strengthen Scouts Canada’s internal and external communications, market positioning, publicity, and public awareness. You will serve as a key contributor to develop and execute strategies to support Scouts Canada’s reputation and drive increased support for membership in Scouting in Canada.

Through leadership of the volunteer Communications Functional Team, this role shares accountability for all aspects of defining and strengthening internal and external communications, market positioning, publicity, and public awareness.

Working in partnership with the Senior Director, Marketing and Communications, the Deputy National Commissioner – Communications and partnering with the broader Scouting Experience teams, the Commissioner ensures tight integration between departments to enable consistency of message, alignment to brand, and messaging of the one franchise model for One Scouts Canada and the Canadian Path program.
 

Functional Leadership:

  • Accountable and Responsible for the development and execution of annual communications strategic plans and targets in support of key company-wide initiatives that support the strategic plan.
  • Accountable for the development and execution of an efficient and effective communications functional volunteer team, associated processes, governance and procedures.
  • Accountable for effective collaboration between council and functional teams on implementation of retention, recruitment communication strategies and tactics.
  • Recruit, supervise and manage performance and provide training, guidance and coaching to volunteers to ensure success in meeting departmental objectives.

Manage, Scouts Canada Brand Alignment & Implementation

  • Responsible for ensuring integration and implementation of the Brand Project and associated outcomes to deliver the Board of Governor’s strategic priority: ‘Bring the Brand to Life’. [Note – Brand Project is currently managed by the Office of the CEO]

Manage Internal Communications

  • Accountable for strategic leadership, development and implementation of internal communications strategies that engage Scouts Canada’s target audiences: Scouters, youth, staff and parents.

Manage External Communications

  • Accountable for strategic leadership, development and implementation of external communications strategies that engage Scouts Canada’s target audiences: Scouters, youth, staff and parents.

Manage Creative Services

  • Accountable for strategic leadership, development and implementation of creative services that engage Scouts Canada’s target audiences: Scouters, youth, staff and parents.

Manage Recruitment Campaigns

  • Accountable to ensure integration with the strategic marketing, diversity, and integration portfolio to develop actionable plans and materials that build on and with the Canadian Path program. [Note – Diversity & Inclusion Strategic Assessment is managed by the People and Culture Department]

Manage Translation Services

  • Accountable for strategic leadership, development and implementation of translation services that engage Scouts Canada’s target audiences: Scouters, youth, staff and parents.

  • Strong leadership skills with prior of production-related team management experience preferred.
  • Strong volunteer engagement experience and developed skills – experience working with large volunteer groups in a complex service delivery / production field considered an asset.
  • Ability to develop and execute on complex communications strategies addressing multiple audience segments;
  • Strong strategic media and public relations capabilities, with proven expertise in contributing to significantly increasing brand awareness
  • Digital and social media savvy to oversee the delivery of timely and relevant information to members and the general public
  • Superior writing, editing, and proof-reading skills, in addition to exceptional verbal communications skills;

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in communications or related degree is preferred;
  • 2+ years communications or related experience is preferred;
  • Service Association and Not-for-Profit experience is an asset;
  • Bilingual would be considered an asset.
     

Working Conditions

  • Works in a remote environment
  • Irregular hours such as evening and weekend work will be required to achieve objectives and collaborate with volunteers – e.g. occasional weekend meetings and more regular out of office hours calls / meetings.
     

Physical Demands

No physical demands beyond what is included in Working Conditions.
