Removing Barriers

Inclusivity Starts with Removing Barriers

2022–2023 was a year focused on Scouts Canada’s Reconciliation journey. Taking an honest look at ourselves, we sought to remove barriers in Scouting to ensure we are an inclusive organization, welcoming to all. Part of this included integrating the “KAIROS Blanket Exercise" and “Past, Present, and Future Sessions” into our employee and volunteer development practices to support an understanding of the value of Scouts Canada’s Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Reconciliation (DEIR) journey.

Removing Financial Barriers for Members

Our members expressed concern around financial barriers, particularly the cost of shipping in relation to Scouts Canada’s fundraisers and the Scout Shop. Over the last year, shipping costs increased 14–23% (region and method, depending). To minimize financial impacts on our community, as with previous years, Scouts Canada subsidized the fuel surcharge and a percentage of shipping costs; however, as costs increase, so do the subsidies needed. Over the last year, Scouts Canada covered nearly $222k in shipping subsidies to support our Groups and families.
